DIVINATION

Scrying

Scrying is an ancient form of divination that is still used in many cultures, especially more primative ones. Basically scrying means to reveal and it is usually done with a flat surface. Most common is water but we have all heard of or seen people use crystal balls, mirrors, polished natural crystals like obsidian and even in candle flames. These are commonly called focuses. Nostradamus used candle flames and mirrors when he foretold the future.

For water scrying, water would usually be poured into a large shallow bowl. The seer would either watch the surface or they would add something to the water to see what shapes could be seen. Coloured oils, melted wax and even crusted herbs and seeds would be spread across the surface of the water and the shapes formed would be interpreted; some by past knowledge, some but intuitive sense of good or bad fortune. The highly polished surface of a mirror or crystals would sometimes have a thin layer of water spread over it in order to call forth guides or spirits. When not in use the focus should be stored in silk or velvet and like all other items used in divination they will eventually take on the energies of the seer.

To scry, there are some simple steps to follow, please be patient, like any skill it takes time to develop:

CELEBRATE THE SEASONS

There are 2 seasons that are coming our way. We have Candlemass/Imbolc on February 2 and the Spring Equinox on March 20. We have talked about Imbolc once; it is a time to acknowledge that everything has to rest and then is renewed. The Earth slowly starts to awake from the season of slumber and darkness that is part of life. It allows us to awaken within ourselves hope and bring new dreams into their formative stage in which we can realize our selves.

The Spring Equinox is a time of rebirth and the first shoots that our dreams and hopes coming into being. It is a time to build the fires that will bring keep our hopes and dreams growing. It is also a time to open up to new possiblities and renewing hope for the future.

Early in the day gather together or sit quietly in an area or room where you can see the early morning sun. Smudge yourself and any others that are with you. Breathe deeply and slowly; inhaling the fresh, vibrant air that hearlds the spring and exhaling the stale dark air of winter. In your mind visualize your dream or hopes for the new year. Place all these into a seed pod and mentally plant that seed under the rising sun. Visualize the seed germinating in the soil and sending out tentative roots into the moist, dark, rich soil. See the roots strenghten and grow thicker and fuller. Watch as the dream or hope begins to break free of the bondage of it's earthly nursery. Know that each time you visit this sprouting hope that it will have grown a little more and that with your tender attention it will in time come into it's full potential. Thank those that have joined with you and give thanks to the Divine for the bounty bestowed upon you both physically and spiritually.

MONTHLY MEDITATION

"Attaining Freedom"

"Why tie the infinite soul to a bony past of flesh? Let go! Cut the cords of flesh consciousness, attachments to the body, hunger, pleasure, pain and bodily and mental involvements. Relax. Loosen the soul from the grip of the body. Let not the heaving breath remind you of physical bars. Sit still in breathless silence, expecting every minute to make the dash for freedom inot the Infinite. Love not your earthly prison.

Free mind from body with a keen-edged knife of stillness. Cut loose your consciousness from the body. Use it no more as an excuse to accept limitations. Turn away your consciousness from the binding body-post. Rush your consciousness beyond the body, sweeping through the minds, hearts and souls of others. Switch on your light in all lives. Feel that you are the One Life that shines in all creation."

from Metaphysical Meditations by Paramahansa Yogananda
